Health insurance, in very simple terms, is protection against financial loss due to some type of health or medical problem that strikes an individual. I say “financial” loss because that is usually the largest loss you will experience beyond the loss of life itself.

Whenever you have a health or medical problem, it can affect you and/or your loved ones financially in various ways. If your health deteriorates to the point of death, your family not only loses you, but the income you have provided that kept them safe and secure in a financial way. Maybe some people don’t want to look at it that way, but it is the truth. Especially if you’re the single provider for your family, they can lose everything if someone in the family can’t get a job immediately to replace your earning power. A health or medical insurance policy that pays off the mortgage and gives them a lump sum of money will obviously help them in a large way financial.

If you become sick and can’t work, who will pay the bills? If you run your own business, will it continue to operate and run while you’re sick and unable to work? Or will it collapse into bankruptcy?

Doctor bills, ambulance bills, hospital stays or homecare bills, chiropractor bills, the cost of medicines or pills… who will pay for these things if you’re unable to work? The cost of footing these types of medical bills due to poor health or medical emergencies can quickly wipe out your savings and even force you to sell your home to pay for treatment. Is that what you want to do your family? Will your spouse make enough money to pay for your medical bills as well as the everyday expenses you and your family have to meet? Health and medical problems can quickly tear families apart.

The smart individual make sures he or she has some type of health or medical insurance to protect the entire family from financial ruin. Health or medical insurance could also help you to pay for expensive treatment that could save your life. Imagine having a young child who suddenly get sick and requires treatment that you can’t afford based on your family income. Many of the new cancer drugs coming out are very expensive. Some forms of chemotherapy treatment today can run anywhere from $100 to $30,000 for an eight week period! There is no way of knowing how expensive new drugs or new treatments will cost for any type of treatment in the future… are you willing to ignore that fact? Are you willing to gamble that you will find some way to pay for that expensive treatment?

These are the hard facts of life that we need to face. These are the hard facts of life that we need to prepare for. Health or medical insurance can protect your family’s financial future, it offers a way to pay for expensive treatment if the need should arise, and it helps to keep from piling additional pressures on the family beyond the pressures that come from health or medical emergencies. Be smart. Shop around and find health or medical insurance to protect you and your family.

Insurance is a unique instrument in our society… it’s something you don’t really want to pay for… it’s something you don’t really want to use… it’s something you don’t really want to think about at all … but if you ignore it, you do so at your own peril.

I think more and more people have come to understand just how unpredictable the future can be because of circumstances that are quite often beyond our control. In our personal lives we face the every-day possibility of events such as sickness or death, accidents, personal or business bankruptcy, theft, fire or natural disasters that can destroy our homes in the blink of an eye. Any of these could easily wipe out your financial security in no time if you’re not prepared.

Insurance is a necessity in our lives. it’s a commodity that you can use to protect the future of your loved ones. Insurance is very simple. You pay someone who is willing to take the risk that you won’t die or you won’t have a car accident or you won’t have a house fire, for example. If you do die, then the insurer has to pay out some type of compensation that you both have agreed upon prior to your death. For example, you pay $50 a month to an insurer who agrees to pay off any remaining mortgage on your home and give your family a lump sum of $100,000 in the event of your death. As long as you keep living, you keep paying the $50 a month “premium”. If you die the insurer pays out as per the agreement. Insurance can be that simple.

Home insurance, accident insurance, liability insurance, fire insurance, business interruption insurance, health insurance, dental insurance, recreational vehicle insurance, boat insurance, pet insurance… the list goes on and on and on. If you’re willing to pay the premiums, you can probably find someone who will ensure anything and everything.

The insurer who takes the risk uses the premiums from you [and the other people they ensure] to pay out claims, run their business, pay salaries to their employees and invest as much as they can. They usually invest what they can in a low risk portfolio that can be easily liquidated in the event of a large catastrophe where they have to pay out on a sudden, large number of claims. By investing as much of the “premium” payments as possible, the insurance companies are usually able to make a return on the investment and, in many cases, they make enough to offset the cost of the claims and keep the premium payments as low as possible across the board for all of the people involved. It’s a win-win situation for both sides…for the insurance companies and for those of us looking to be insured.

Insurance is an extremely important commodity for all of us today. We just never know what’s going to happen tomorrow. Some of us may feel it doesn’t matter, but for those of us with loved ones, we want to make sure their future is as secure as possible if we are no longer around.
